Northern Forest Lands Council
Planning the Future of the North Woods
In 1991, Governor McKernan appointed Jerry Bley to represent Maine environmental interests on the Northern Forest Lands Council. Congress created the Council in response to concerns created by increased development pressures on the Northern Forest lands in a four state area. The Council--composed of timber, conservation, and state government representatives--developed state and federal strategies to preserve traditional uses of the forest.
Parmachenee Lake Access Plan
Oxford County, Maine
Creative Conservation, LLC facilitated a process to resolve conflicts that had developed over public access policies on a remote section of a paper company’s ownership. Participants included camp lessees, a commercial sporting camp, mill workers, the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, and company officials. The process resulted in a consensus plan for managing access and use.
Maine Land Acquisition Priorities Project
In 1996, Governor King appointed Jerry Bley to chair a committee charged with developing new public land acquisition initiatives. The committee, composed of diverse interests, presented a consensus report to the Governor that resulted in a new $50 million land acquisition bond issue and a new scoring mechanism for selecting land acquisition projects by the Land for Maine's Future Board.
Analysis of Plum Creek Moosehead Plan
The Open Space Institute retained Creative Conservation, LLC to work with economic experts to conduct an analysis of the development and conservation plan proposed by Plum Creek Timber Company for the Moosehead Lake Region. The project compared the company’s plan with development and conservation that would likely occur absent the plan.
Land Conservation Task Force
In 2019, Creative Conservation, LLC co-coordinated the Land Conservation Task Force which laid out a strategic plan for the next generation of land conservation in Maine.
Maine Mountain Collaborative and Exemplary Forestry Investment Fund
Creative Conservation, LLC helped to create the Maine Mountain Collaborative, a collaborative of land conservation groups focused on conserving Maine’s Western Mountains. As part of this effort, Creative Conservation, LLC has been a member of a team that has founded the Exemplary Forestry Investment Fund, a timberland investment company looking to acquire forest lands to be managed for high-quality timber, wildlife and carbon sequestration.
